 J. Richard “Dick” Sr. and Mildred “Tillie” Fink Fullington became owners of Fullington Auto Bus Company in 1947. As the family business is approaching its 100th anniversary, we reflect on their accomplishments and contributions to the company they built.
The company was founded in 1908 by Dick’s grandfather, Emerson Fullington. It all began for Dick when his father, Richard, drove his mother, Iva, to the Clearfield Hospital in a town bus to deliver Dick on October 26, 1918. Dick began working when old enough to walk, accompanying his father to the “bus barn” in Clearfield, PA where the vehicles were garaged. Learning the bus business from the ground up, Dick devoted his entire life to the motorcoach business, taking it from a small family business to one of the most recognized and valued transportation providers of our time.
In 1944, Dick married Tillie and after their three children were in school, she began her career at the bus company. She was a pioneer in the business world by being a professional businesswoman before her time. In the motorcoach industry, Tillie was instrumental in the establishment of rights for bus companies to set up tours. The many tours and charters that we provide today are a result of Dick & Tillie’s tireless efforts to share their own travel experiences and destinations with their customers. All who knew Dick and Tillie were inspired by them, whether family, friend, employee, customer or acquaintance.
As Tillie passed away in 1999 and Dick in 2006, 2007 marks the first year in sixty that they will not have a hand in what remains a family business. It is truly the end of an era. As we continue to do their life’s work, we will strive to do it in the manner and fashion that is their legacy to us.
Mom & Dad, Nana & PopPop, you are sorely missed.
